Ducati Monster 659 ? Australia?s New LAMS Learner

According to our friends at Ducati News Today, Ducati Australia has announced that it will begin offering a Ducati Monster 659, a Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) compliant motorcycle for learning motorcyclists. Something we reported on back in March, the Monster 659 is a repurposed Monster 696 that complies with Australia’s laws and restrictions regarding motorcycle purchases by new riders. Though with this news the Monster 659 has been official announced, it still is not ...

Xbox Live security alert follows PlayStation Network hack

It's a much smaller issue than the PlayStation Network nightmare, but gamers are naturally jumpy at the moment...

In the midst of Sony's PlayStation Network security breach, Microsoft has had to issue its own security alert today. On the company's Xbox Live Status page, the following warning has been issued:

"Users may receive potential phishing attempts via title specific messaging while playing Modern Warfare 2.

"We are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience."

The problem appears to be restricted to one title, and is centred around the system's matchmaking process, which arranges online multiplayer gaming sessions. It seems to be a reasonably routine problem, but with fears over online security riding high, several industry news sources have picked up on it.

US games blog Kotaku has also reported that dozens of modified Xbox 360 machines previously banned from Xbox Live have been allowed back on to the service ? but only for a short time. Users who had 'modded' their machines to run unnofficial applications and pirated games found that they could suddenly sign in to the Xbox Live service ? even though they had previously been ejected in one of Microsoft's regular 'banhammer' sessions. However, shortly afterwards all the machines were reportedly banned again.

The speculation is that Microsoft may have been testing its infrastructure in the wake of the PlayStation Network hack, or that it was trialling its new Xbox 360 disc format, which is partially intended to prevent piracy by blocking the DVD firmware hack that's been exploitable on Xbox 360 for several years.

Windows 8 Explorer to feature Ribbon UI, SkyDrive and Mesh integration?

windows 8 explorer ribbon
Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott have posted a second look at some of the early changes which have surface in Windows 8 milestone 3. First there was the restyled Welcome Screen, and now it appears that Microsoft is toying with bringing the Ribbon UI to Explorer.

The Ribbon, like in Microsoft Word and Excel, is context-aware, adding tabs for specific tasks which apply to the folder you're viewing -- such as library or picture management. You can also make out two new buttons in the status bar, which allow you to change the current folder's view style.

It's clear from all the placeholder images and repeated elements that this is very much a work in progress, but featuring the Ribbon more prominently in Windows 8 would certainly be a logical progression for Microsoft. It's slowly become more ubiquitous, moving beyond Office and into Wordpad, Paint, and several of the Windows Live Essentials applications.

There's more to the screenshots than the Ribbon UI, however. Our friend Long Zheng has noted two interesting elements in the images: Web sharing and sync (image after the break). That would likely mean users will be able to quickly upload files to SkyDrive and synchronize using Live Mesh right from Explorer in Windows 8. That's not a total surprise considering many of the earliest leaked images of Windows 8 showed Windows Live integration on the desktop.

Race Direction Review Of Jerez Incident Handling: Nothing To See Here, Move Along

The aftermath of the crash between Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner at Jerez continues to rumble on. After Stoner accused the marshals of favoritism, not doing enough to help him rejoin the race, but assisting Rossi, Race Direction announced that they would be reviewing the evidence and holding a hearing at Estoril.

That meeting and review was held today, and afterwards Race Direction issued a statement on the incident. As expected, they found that the handling of the incident had been "safe and appropriate", and that no further action would be taken against the marshals, only recommending that the Grand Prix Commission study the situation further.

Facebook launches unified mobile site, announces 250 million mobile users

Facebook has announced that its two mobile sites -- m.facebook.com and touch.facebook.com -- have been unified, bringing a simpler mobile experience to Facebook users. And there are a lot of those -- a quarter billion, according to Facebook.

Smartphone users won't be losing any functionality because of the consolidation. If your phone supported the enhacned features offered by touch.facebook.com, the new site will automatically flip the switch when you visit.

Rolling the sites together helps simplify things for Facebook's developer team. Now changes can be pushed to a single site instead of two separate sites, which makes it easier to ensure that all mobile users receive a nearly identical experience regardless of the device they're using.

The new Facebook mobile can also check to see if your phone supports geolocation. If it doesn't, you won't be seeing much of Facebook Places -- which obviously relies heavily on geolocation. Images can also be optimized on the fly to keep page performance from suffering on less powerful devices. You can see the three different versions of the share button below, courtesy our friends at TechCrunch.

Apple orders iCab iOS browser to cripple JavaScript modules

The developer of iCab Mobile, a feature-rich alternative to the Safari Web browser on iPad and iPhone, has been ordered by Apple to remove its ability to download and install JavaScript modules.

Presumably it's not the fact that iCab can execute JavaScript that's causing Apple to apoplectically puff and splutter, but rather its ability to download modules. Both Apple and Google frown upon apps that contain market-like functionality, and someone at Apple probably thought that iCab's JavaScript modules looked like a bit too much like discrete apps.

Alexander Clauss, iCab's developer, has rather a lot to say on the matter. "Maybe if I would have called the modules 'smart bookmarks' and would have made installing them much more complicated, Apple would have never asked to remove the ability to download them from the internet. The great user experience of installing modules has probably created a suspicion that these modules are more than just a piece of JavaScript code. From a pure technical point of view, if Apple does not allow to download modules (JavaScript code), Apple would also have to disallow to load web pages in general, because these do also contain JavaScript code."

In conclusion, to circumvent Apple's draconian decree, iCab Mobile now simply comes bundled with some 20 JavaScript modules. The ability to download modules made by third-party developers has been disabled, however -- but even then, Clauss says that you can simply contact him and ask for your module to be bundled with the next version of iCab.

The Republican Plan with Lipstick

If you can?t sell the pig, figure Republicans, put lipstick on it and maybe no one will notice. Add some perfume and maybe you?ll even attract enough Dems to get it enacted.

A Senate proposal by Republican Bob Corker of Tennessee and Democrat Claire McCaskill of Missouri would save $7.6 trillion over 10 years. How? By capping federal spending at 20.6 percent of gross domestic product within a decade. That?s down from 24.3 percent now.

This isthe Ryan plan with lipstick. The Ryan plan puts spending at 20.25 of GDP in 10 years. By comparison, spending under Republican President Ronald Reagan from 1981-1989 averaged 22 percent of GDP at a time when no baby boomers had retired.

As a result, Corker/McCaskill would have the same dire result as the Republican plan: According to an analysis by the Washington-based Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Corker/McCaskill would require ?enormous cuts? in Medicare and Medicaid and other programs, and likely force similar policy changes to the entitlement programs that Ryan has proposed.

The reductions would total more than $800 billion in 2022 alone ? which would be the equivalent of eliminating the entire Medicare program or the Defense Department. ?The Ryan plan is at least quite explicit about the changes that are proposed to be made in specific programs,? says Paul Van de Water, a health-care expert at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. The Corker-McCaskill plan ?at first blush may sound sort of benign,? headds. ?The effects on real people in many cases would be extremely dire.?

Watch your wallets. Other Senate Dems are showing interest in the lipsticked pig as well. The Corker/McCaskill proposal is being actively supported by West Virginia?s Joe Manchin. Not surpringly, Joe Liebermanis on board.

Under the McCaskill-Corker plan, if Congress fails to limit spending and keep it under the annual cap, the Office of Management and Budget would have to make evenly distributed cuts throughout the budget. If the automatic cuts took place, they would total about $1.3 trillion in Social Security, $856 billion in Medicare and $547 billion in Medicaid reductions over the first nine years. To avoid the automatic across-the-board cuts, Congress would be under the gun to enact policies for Medicare and Medicaid exactly along the lines of what Ryan hasproposed.

The McCaskill/Corker spending cap would also make it impossible for government to boost the economy in recessions.

Don?t be fooled, and don?t let anyone else be. McCaskill/Corker is the same Republican pig.
