Blog Post: News: Extending the Our School Needs redemption codes

Many of you participated in this fall's Our School Needs contest, and received redemption codes to use towards Donorschoose.org projects. For those not familiar with Donorschoose.org, it's a non-profit whose sole purpose is to help public schools afford small classroom improvements that otherwise would go by the wayside, given budgetary restrictions.

The original deadline to use those codes was today, November 30th, but we have decided to extend that deadline to the end of the calendar year (December 31, 2010). With so many codes being distributed throughout the contest period, we quickly realized that even the most devoted participants simply did not have enough time to get all their codes redeemed by the November deadline. We hope this allows you all enough time to get your Our School Needs projects on Donorschoose.org funded!

Thanks!

Opera 11 beta brings "tab stacking," on-demand plug-ins, more

opera 11 beta
So far with the Opera 11 snapshots, the focus has been on speed, extension support, and some pretty major UI work on the email client. There's been plenty of additional activity behind the scenes, however, and with the arrival of the Opera 11 beta today you can now play with one more feature: tab stacking.

What is it? It's a way to keep your browser tabs organized, and it's going to be very handy for those of you who tend to accumulate tabs like 8-year-olds accumulate Pokemon cards. Maybe you have 8 tabs open which are all related to a new motherboard you're buying -- just drag and drop them onto a single tab, and Opera automatically creates a stack for you. You can see the tiny arrow pointing to the right on my screenshot. Click the arrow, and your tabs slide out. Hover over a stack and Opera 11 shows you thumbnails for each tab inside it. [Firefox Panorama, eat your heart out -Ed]

Opera's shared a demonstration video which shows you tab stacking in action -- check it out after the break!

There's more to like about the new beta, of course. There's now an option to load plug-ins on demand, the address bar has been re-touched to make security information more visible, and Opera's mouse gestures have been improved. It's got extensions, too -- and we recently ran down 10 particularly handy ones.

LG Star dual-core Tegra 2 smartphone gets the hands-on treatment from GSM-Israel

LG Star

It's kind of fitting, actually, that the LG Star makes an appearance during the holiday season, and in Israel, no less. But such is the case with the 4-inch dual-core Tegra 2 monster. GSM -Israel got their hands on the unannounced device (model LGP990) and have given it some serious video treatment. Front-facing and rear 8MP cameras? Check. HDMI out? Check. LG's custom UI? Yep. It's running Android 2.2 Froyo -- not Gingerbread, but that's not much of a surprise because we're all waiting on Gingerbread.

Other nuggets we glean from the video (it's in Hebrew, and we're a little rusty on that language): LG's got its own Facebook app, the Star towers over the iPhone 4 (Apple's really going to have to up that screen size someday), and the browser loads as fast (if not faster) than mobile Safari, the test page loads just as fast, and Flash is as smooth as it's ever been. Video's after the break. It's a sight to behold, folks. [GSM-Israel via Engadget]

Bajaj Gobbles Up Some More KTM Stock

Bajaj must be celebrating a late Thanksgiving (we might be talking about the wrong Indians here) as the Pune-based automotive group has gobbled up some more shares of Austrian company’s stock. Strengthening the two companies’ strategic partnership, Bajaj has modestly increased its 35.67% interest in KTM, becoming a 38.08% shareholder. Also coming out of the orange brand is news that Stefan Pierer will continue on as CEO of the company through 2015, and Friedrich Roithner, ...

Archos family of internet tablets finally receives update to Android 2.2 Froyo

 Archos Internet Tablets receive FroYo

Archos, which recently revealed its FroYo update timeline via Facebook, has held true to its word.  As of today, anxious Archos internet tablet owners can get in on the Froyo goodness. For their price and functionality, the Archos line of internet tablets are an excellent option if you're in the market for an Android powered portable media player or tablet.  I'm guilty of owning an aged iDevice from 2007, and I'm looking for any reason to ditch it for an Android PMP, and this FroYo update could be what it took for me to get on board with Archos.

FroYo brings quite an impressive list of improvements and enhancements to the Archos family.  In addition to the infamous JIT compiler, Android 2.2.1 brings enhanced Microsoft Exchange support, better 3rd party application support, improved camera operation, faster USB transfer and more.

Hit the break for a full list of improvements.  And of course, head into our tablet forums to share your thoughts.  Let us know what you think of FroYo on your Archos tablet.  [Archos.com]

GateGuru is free and just in time for holiday travelers

I love finding useful free apps. Today I'll steer you to GateGuru, a free app that will help you navigate airport terminals and find food, ATMs, conference rooms and shops. The app was featured in an iPhone TV ad earlier this year, and it has been updated since then with some new features and bug fixes.

GateGuru starts by locating the nearest airports via GPS (U.S. and Canada only, unfortunately). You can also type in an airport's three-letter identifier code or city name. Once your airport is identified, you can select the main terminal or a particular concourse. You'll get a map and a list of what's there, be it food, shops, or services like shoe shine stands or free Wi-Fi.

You also get user-supplied ratings of shops and restaurants. Sometimes there are photos as well. This is all pretty handy, especially if you are in an unfamiliar airport. You can also add your own photos and reviews.

Microsoft Kinect: 2.5m sold

Have you bought yourself a Kinect yet? And do you even have the space for one?

You can't fault Microsoft when it comes to shouting about the sales of its new Kinect motion controller, but with 2.5m units now sold globally you probably can't blame it.

While Move on the PlayStation 3 is an excellent step up from the Nintendo Wii, it seems as though Kinect has really caught the imagination of punters. Or maybe it has had better advertising.

Whatever, Kinect is big right now (cue joke about wishing my front room was too). Microsoft's Xbox boss, Don Mattrick, thinks the target of 5m Kinect sales before Christmas is within reach.

We are thrilled about the consumer response to Kinect, and are working hard with our retail and manufacturing partners to expedite production and shipments of Kinect to restock shelves as fast as possible to keep up with demand. With sales already exceeding 2.5m units in just 26 days, we are on pace to reach our forecast of 5m units sold to consumers this Christmas.

Despite some issues with the size of my front room, the Kinect has gone down pretty well here so far ? the Kinectimals game in particular. But what about you? Still a fan? Not interested at all? Or waiting till Christmas?

Found Footage: Injection molding process for the Glif

Over the holiday weekend, we noted that the Glif is now available for ordering (although it's not shipping quite yet). The iPhone 4 stand / tripod mount gadget is a triple threat: functional, attractively designed and the owner of a great backstory.

The Glif guys wanted to share the experience of producing their product, so they released a short video covering the injection molding process out in South Dakota. If you're a fan of the Science Channel's hypnotic How It's Made show, you'll dig this clip. It's embedded in the second half of this post.

Again, congratulations to team Glif on taking their idea from the napkin stage to physical realization.

Thanks to Dustin for the heads-up.

Apple, Microsoft, Google Attacked For Evil Plugins

nk497 writes "A Mozilla exec has attacked Apple, Microsoft and Google for installing plugins without users' permission. 'Why do Microsoft, Google, Apple, and others think that it is an OK practice to add plug-ins to Firefox when I'm installing their software packages?' Asa Dotzler asks. 'That is precisely how a Trojan horse operates... These additional pieces of software installed without my consent may not be malicious but the means by which they were installed was sneaky, underhanded, and wrong.' He called on them to 'stop being evil.'"

AMERICAN CONSUMERS ARE FINALLY GETTING DEBT RELIGION -- Debt-To-GDP Drops By Most Ever

The reason the whole economic world almost imploded two years ago was that Americans had racked up absolutely massive debts--the highest as a percentage of GDP in history, by a mile.

This 30-year borrowing binge, which began in earnest in the early 1980s, fueled the impressive economic growth of the 1990s and 2000s, and it helped push asset prices (stocks and houses) to staggering highs.

(It's amazing how your standard of living can improve when someone gives you a credit card and keeps lending you more and more money to pay off your balances, no matter how much you borrow.)

But then, somewhere in 2007, there came a day that consumers and businesses just couldn't borrow any more, and asset prices collapsed, taking the economy down with them.

Since that day, the government has been doing everything it can to encourage American consumers to start right on borrowing again, to go back to the happy free-spending days of the early 2000s and get the economy humming. But consumers, thankfully, appear to have learned their lesson (and if they haven't, lenders have).

Instead of just going back to borrowing and spending, consumers have begun to work off their debts. In so doing, they are gradually rebuilding their "household balance sheets," a process that will eventually give the country and economy a much more solid foundation.

As the following charts from Asha Bangalore at Northern Trust illustrate, in the past two years, household borrowing has seen its biggest drop ever as a percentage of GDP.

Of course, as the charts also make clear, this "deleveraging" process has a long way to go. (And governments--federal, state, and local--are picking up most of the borrowing slack).

What consumers spend on debt repayment, they can't spend on stuff.  So if this deleveraging continues--which it must, if consumers are ever to return to a normal level of indebtedness--the repayment process will keep a lid on consumer spending for the foreseeable future.

Here's Asha:

The soft trajectory of consumer spending and continued reduction in residential investment expenditures reflects the sharp reduction in household debt.  Outstanding home mortgages have dropped from $10.606 trillion in the first quarter of 2008 to $10.126 trillion in the second quarter of 2010 (see Chart 1).  Household credit card debt has fallen roughly $157 billion from the peak in the third quarter of 2008 to $2.41 trillion (see Chart 1).

Household debt

Total outstanding household debt as a percentage of GDP has fallen roughly six percentage points between 2009:Q1 and 2010:Q2 (see Chart 2).  This decline is the largest on record in the post-war period.  The drop of household debt as a percent of GDP in the early 1980s (48.95% in 1980:Q2 vs. 46.65% in 1981:Q3) was significant but smaller than the current occurrence and it was the result of credit controls imposed in the inflation battle of that period.  The lifting of credit controls led to a sharp reversal in the mid 1980s (see Chart 2).  The root cause of the current deleveraging is an entirely different story where severely indebted households are cutting back on borrowing to finance expenditures.

Household debt as percentage of GDP

Asha also takes a look at the level of overall private-sector debt (households and businesses), which has also fallen in the past two years. Like household debt, total private sector debt is still extremely high relative to the average of the past 60 years.

Firesheep comes to webOS

It's not as fast or pretty as its desktop cousin, but an ambitious tinkerer has still managed to port Firesheep to webOS. Yes, all the Wi-Fi tomfoolery that made you shudder as a Firefox extension can run on your Palm Pre.The man who performed the shoehorning -- who happens to be called Sebastian but probably isn't our Sebastian-- has shared a YouTube video of his handiwork which you can check out after the break.

Homebrew and hacking is part of the fun of owning a webOS device, so it's not really a surprise to see Firesheep running -- and it's pretty darn cool, if only as a proof-of-concept.

Blog Post: Bing Maps im neuen Look!

Wir haben unserer Kartensuche Bing Maps ein Update verpasst. Dabei wurden in erster Linie Änderungen umgesetzt, die den Service benutzerfreundlicher machen sollen.

Was ist neu?

Vostu, The Zynga Of Brazil, Raises $30 Million At $300 Million Valuation

Social gaming is an international phenomenon. While Zynga is the leading social gaming company in the U.S., in Brazil it is a company called Vostu. The company has been growing rapidly and just closed a $30 million series C financing led by Tiger Management, with Accel Partners joining the round. Accel partner Jim Breyer, who sits on Facebook's board, will take a board seat on Vostu. Previous investors Intel Capital and General Catalyst partners also participated. Investors purchased about 10 percent of the company in this latest round, giving Vostu a post-money valuation of roughly $300 million, according to a source with knowledge of the deal. Including previous rounds, Vostu now has raised a total of $46 million. Vostu boasts 20 million active players a month, a tenfold increase from the beginning of the year. With only 40 percent Internet penetration in Brazil, that means that about a quarter of all Brazilians who are on the Internet play a Vostu game. Vostu currently has six social games (including a farm game, poker game, as well as soccer and crime role playing games) which are played on Brazil's largest social network, Google-owned Orkut. Almost all the revenues comes from virtual currency, which players spend inside the games.

Real-time discovery of Twitter images with Hashalbum

Hashalbum, Twitter gallery
One of Twitter's greatest strengths is the sheer wealth of data that it produces. Like the Internet itself, though, without search engines, that data is all but inaccessible. Few would argue that Google defined the Internet that we use today, and likewise it is only through ingenious indexing that the Twitter fire hose will ultimately become useful. Which brings me neatly onto Hashalbum, a site that simply searches Twitter for a hashtag (like #tsa), and shows you all of the images contained in that data set.

It's a stupidly simple idea that instantly exposes a treasure trove of funny, poignant and timely images. Supposedly the albums update in real-time, but I can't confirm that -- and I also don't know how much of the Twitter fire hose Hashalbum actually parses. Other than letting you search by hashtag, the site does nothing else.

Of course, because the results are unfiltered and the engine is completely 'dumb' (there's no analysis of the images themselves), the quality of the searches isn't very high. Just like Twitter, Hashalbum produces a stream of random, stream-of-consciousness images -- it's still down to you to pick out the interesting bits, but hey, that's Twitter!
